Black Fog Overview:

The all new Tiffen Black Fog Camera Filters provide an overall atmospheric softening that creates a smooth wide flare from the highlights yet keeps the blacks, black without overly muting colors or losing detail in shadows. This more subtle effect can be used to add an overall look to a project.

The New Fogs have been used extensively in real production conditions by top DPs from around the globe. Steven Poster, ASC who is gearing up for his next film, says, "I think they both have similar qualities to the Classic Double Fog when they are used with digital cameras. They can create a sticky dark day, a romantic softness emphasizing the highlights, or an atmospheric nighttime motif."

To promote long life, only Tiffen filters are manufactured using the exclusive Colorcore Technology® process that laminates the filter substrate between two pieces of optical glass, then grinds and polishes them to a precise tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch flatness. They come with a 10-year Warranty.

Available in Standard Sizes & Special Orders

Each filter type comes in standard sizes (4x4, 6.6x6.6, 4x5.65, 138mm) with a choice of 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, or 2, densities. Special sizes and strengths are available upon request.

"On Bridgerton Season 3, we often shot in historical locations that had priceless artwork. Therefore, we were not able to use atmosphere in the air. I achieved a similar look using Tiffen Black Fog Filters. They made it feel like there was ambient diffusion in the space."

POLARIZER

Polarizers

What does a Circular Polarizing filter do?
What’s the difference between a circular and linear polarizer? Along with UV and ND filters, Polarizer filters are among the essential Digital SLR camera filters every photographer should have this filter guide will explain it all. Polarizing filters provide color and contrast enhancement. Reflected light often shows up as whitish glare that washes out color in an image. A Polarizer filter corrects this problem producing deep, dramatically blue skies. It also removes glare from non-metallic surfaces, such as windows and water. Color saturation in general, especially outdoors, can be improved significantly by using polarizer filters

Neutral Density

Neutral Density

What does a neutral density filter do?
These filters reduce the amount of light passing through the camera lens without changing the color of the scene.  They are especially useful in bright light conditions to help prevent overexposure.  Neutral Density filters also allow proper exposure at a wider lens opening for reduced depth-of-field to highlight a key subject by making the foreground and/or background out of focus. ND’s are must have filters especially if you are thinking of doing more landscape and nature photography. Digital photographers, this neutral density filter guide will help you determine the best neutral density filter for your situation. ND filters are one of the essential digital camera filters. They’ll work just as well as b&w nd filters as they do for color photography.

XLE Series (Long Exposure)

XLE Series (Long Exposure)

The Tiffen XLE Series APEX filter is a 10 stop neutral density filter designed for use on all DSLR, APS-C & Micro 4:3 sensors regardless of lens coating.

Designed for extreme long exposures, the filter will allow you to blur any movement in the scene. The APEX is equipped with a standard near infrared blocker and a Tiffen Hot Mirror to eliminate all IR pollution that long exposure photography is susceptible to. These two features allow you to capture your long exposures without the risk of compromising the color in your image. If you require a heightened red response in your image, either manually reset your white balance or adjust in your post-production software.

Digital HT (Multicoated)

Digital HT filters are available as:
Digital Ultra Clear™, Haze 86 (with 86% UV absorption), Circular Polarizer, 812® Warming Filter, ND 0.6, ND 1.2, Soft/FX® 3, Star 4 Point 2, and Color-Grad® ND 0.6 in sizes 52mm-82mm. Each filter comes with its own distinctive soft pouch for storage when not in use.

XLE Series (Long Exposure)

Digital HT filters are a state-of-the-art technological breakthrough in multi-coated photo and video filters. Made for the discerning professional and imaging enthusiast, Digital HT filters with Hi-Trans® Double-Sided Titanium Multi-Coating surpass even military specifications for hardness and durability.*

Digital HT – High Transmission – filters offer the strength of a Titanium coating combined with the purest optical quality glass and Tiffen’s Academy-Award-winning ColorCore™ technology. They present unmatched scratch-resistant durability and worry-free cleaning while other coated filters on the market today cautiously suggest delicate, if any, cleaning procedures, in fear of destroying the coating (and thereby the filter).

And that’s not all – these High Transmission filters feature a low profile titanium finish ring and anti-reflective black lock ring which sets these filters apart from the rest.

Digital HT filters are made in the USA and come with a 10-year warranty – your guarantee of quality assurance. More…

Tiffen’s research and development team has conquered the challenges of multi-coating. No longer is your investment in a multi-coated filter subject to the everyday challenges of dirt, humidity, and potential scratching which can render your multi-coated filter useless.

Along with the extreme toughness and durability, Tiffen Digital HT Titanium Coating features excellent Anti-Reflective and Transmission (HT – High Transmission) characteristics. The Titanium coating consistently reflects less than 1% of the imaging light hitting the front surface of the filter while transmitting nearly 99%.

Variable Neutral Density

Neutral density filters reduce the amount of light going through the lens into your camera. By reducing the light you are able to achieve the following:

  • Allows the use of slow shutter speeds, with high speed films or digital cameras, to record movement/image blur in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds or any fast moving subject
  • Gives you full control over your depth of field. You are able to decrease depth of field by using wider apertures, which helps separate subjects from their background (subject matter in focus while your background is blurred)
  • Enables cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Variable Neutral Density

The Tiffen Variable ND filter is a unique, versatile and flexible tool, affording you the convenience of using several Neutral Density filters all in one.  Primarily used as a photographic tool for controlling depth of field and exposure, the Variable ND is being sought in the video market as well because it is fast, easy to use, small, lightweight, and does not require additional accessories such as a matte box.

The Tiffen Variable ND filter operates on the same principle as a Circular Polarizer – rotate until you reach your desired effect and shoot. It allows you to have continuous control over the amount of light coming through your lens in an approximate range of 2 (ND 0.6) to 8 (ND 2.4) stops – while maintaining the integrity of your image. Note: The evenly spaced indexing marks between MIN and MAX do not represent calibrated stops. They are for reference only, to be used as a density bench-mark to return to a previous setting.

Aerial (Drone) Filters

TIFFEN ND STARTER KIT

TIFFEN ND STARTER KIT

AUTEL X-STAR™
AUTEL X-STAR PREMIUM™

This custom filter line, designed specifically for the AUTEL X-STAR™ and AUTEL X-STAR PREMIUM™ drones, will feature a Neutral Density 4 (2 stop), Neutral Density 8 (3 stop), Neutral Density 16 (4 stop) and Polarizing filter. The Neutral Density filters are essential tools in aerial drone photography and cinematography. Drone operators find that using nd filters will reduce the camera’s shutter speed, which will reduce the Jello Effect drone video is known for caused by camera vibration, creating a more cinematic and natural look. The Polarizers are essential to adding contrast to blue skies and reducing glare and reflections off metallic surfaces and water.

Drone

Aerial (Drone) Filters

On older drones, such as the Phantom 3 and 4, the aperture is locked at F 2.8, meaning that the only way to successfully obtain proper exposure is to increase your shutter speed. This increase in shutter speed, will often time result in what is known as the “jello effect”, or to simply put it, shaky footage. Depending on the angle you are filming at, your camera may even pick up the edge of your propeller blades, leaving you with an obstructed view and choppy footage.

Newer drones, such as the Phantom 4 PRO and Phantom 4 Advanced, give operators the ability to manually adjust aperture settings, allowing for an enhanced cinematic look. While these exciting new opportunities for filming at a slower shutter speed broaden one’s potential for image capture, they can also present the challenge of maintaining proper light balance. In order to help combat this potential overexposure of light, a Neutral Density filter can now be placed and regularly used on one’s drone camera.

By using a Neutral Density Filter, a certain amount of light will be blocked from reaching your sensor. By limiting the amount of light that comes in contact with the sensor, you will be able to film at slower shutter speeds, and a lower aperture, helping you to successfully achieve a cinematic look.

ND 4

  • Reduces shutter speed down by 2 stops
  • Provides better control in conditions with decreasing light, such as dusk or dawn
  • Enhances overall image quality by reducing excess vibration

ND 8

  • Reduces shutter speed down by 3 stops
  • Provides better control in cloudy conditions
  • Enhances overall image quality by reducing excess vibration

ND 16

PRO100 Series Filter System

Very few feelings can compare to those we experience when we successfully capture that “perfect” in-camera shot. While post production edits can add substantial value to our imagery, the effects we receive from proper camera filtration will, and have always been, those of which we strive to see successfully achieved in our photography. These effects, such as the enhancement of vibrant blue skies, smooth wispy water and dramatic sunsets, are all made possible with the help of a tool such as Tiffen’s PRO100 Series Filter System.

ACADEMY AWARD WINNING FILTRATION

Tiffen’s proprietary ColorCore® process assures color consistency every time. This, along with our innovative product designs, has earned us Scientific and Engineering Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences® , as well as EMMY® Awards from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences®.

Diffusion

Produced and narrated by Carey Duffy, along with Steven Poster ASC as project consultant, and photographed by cinematographer Stephen Murphy.

The film focuses the viewer’s attention by categorizing the style and effects type produced by the filters into main classifications – i.e. Black Halation, White Halation, Optical Resolution – and then sub categories them into named sets, showing the effect of the individual densities.

Diffusion

Tiffen’s 4K Diffusion Test Film was produced to clearly show viewers the distinctive variances and subtle differences across our large range of Diffusion filters. It’s not that these filters are specifically 4K – the 4K label has been attached to the presentation because the production was shot and is also available in 4K deliverable formats, as well as standard HD.

Fog

The Tiffen Fog filter mimics the effect of natural fog, creating a soft glow and flare and producing a warm romantic tone. A natural fog causes lights to glow and flare.  Contrast is generally lower, and sharpness may be affected as well.  Fog filters mimic this effect of atomized water droplets in the air.  The soft glow can be used to make lighting more visible, make it better felt by the viewer.  The effect of humidity in, say, a tropical scene can be created or enhanced.

Fog

In lighter grades, these filters can take the edge off excess contrast and sharpness. Heavier grades can create unnatural effects, as for fantasy sequences.

Cool Day For Night

Day for Night filters are a great way to create the look of night during the day without the hassle. Combined with proper exposure compensation, Tiffen Day for Night filters are an easy and cost effective way to create a realistic dusk or nighttime appearance when filming during the day, simplifying production requirements. These filters will save the expense of what might be extensive lighting needed for large areas when actually shooting at night, instead of making use of available sunlight. The Cool Day for Night is based on the

Cool Day For Night

perception that moonlight is cool, therefore bluish in color. To simulate a feeling of moonlight, a particular shade of lavender is used, producing visual coolness while maintaining realistic flesh tones.

Center Spot

Is a softening filter that allows you to maintain sharp, clear focus in the center of the image while blurring the perimeter of the frame. This helps to isolate your central subject matter while softening the surrounding areas.

Center Spot

Double Fog

Have milder flare and softening characteristics than standard Fog filters while exhibiting a much greater effect on contrast, especially in the stronger grades.  A very thick natural fog will still allow close-up objects to appear sharp.  So will a Double Fog filter.  The key to the effect is the much lower contrast combined with a minimal amount of highlight flare.

Fog

Sepia

Adds a warm, pale greenish-brown coloration across the entire image to provide a nostalgic, old-fashioned appearance. The solid color design makes this filter well-suited to pairing with other filters for further control over the appearance of imagery.

The 2 color density provides less sepia coloration than the 3 density, but more than the 1 density filter.

Sepia

Streak

Special effects filter designed to render a single light ray from a point light source.

This filter features a single series of etched lines spaced 2mm apart from each other, which run diametrically across the filter surface.

This filter is set in a non-rotating mount and can be used in conjunction with a filter holder or other filter to adjust the orientation of the light ray to suit your composition or desired effect.

Color FX

WHAT IS A COLOR FX FILTER?

Color FX Filters add a little something extra to your images, like an Enhancing filter for fall foliage. They transform an average scene into something spectacular. Whether it is enhancing certain details of a landscape, warming up skin tones, or adding a dramatic sky to your photo, Color FX filters provide you with the solution.

COLOR/LIGHT COMPENSATING

FL-D® & FL-B®
Provides correct color, removing harsh green cast caused by fluorescent bulbs.  Use FL-D with daylight film and FL-B with tungsten film. Pleasing skin tones under fluorescent lighting without flash. True-to-life color rendition. Essential in any environment where ambient light source is fluorescent.

Film Enhancement

Color Correction Filters

Sunlight, daylight, incandescent, fluorescent, and other artificial light sources all have color characteristics that vary significantly. Color correction filters give you better images by adjusting for these light variations. Film and video are rated for a particular color temperature such as that of daylight or tungsten light. Filters are used to correct differences in color temperature between the recording medium and the light source.

Color Contrast

Colored filters for black and white photography perform a variety of filtration effects including contrast control, enhanced skin tones, tonal corrections and more dramatic landscapes.

Although originally intended for use with black and white film, black and white camera filters can also be used as a creative tool in color imaging.
